New Paradigm in Semiconductor Manufacturing Skilling…

A New Paradigm in Semiconductor Skilling: SEMI-IESA-ESSCI Workshop at IIT Guwahati

IIT Guwahati, one of India’s leading technological institutions, played host to a trailblazing Semiconductor Manufacturing Skills Workshop on April 10–11, 2025. Conducted by SEMI India, IESA, and ESSCI, the workshop delivered a cutting-edge blend of academic precision and industry relevance—marking a bold step forward in building India’s semiconductor manufacturing capacity.

With the rising momentum of India’s semiconductor mission, this workshop stands out as a model for experiential learning—successfully combining hands-on training, eyes-on insights, and curriculum infusion aligned with AICTE guidelines. It was designed not just to inform but to empower faculty, researchers, and students to build real-world capabilities that stretch across semiconductor and allied domains.

A Curriculum That Breathes Industry

The workshop was laser-focused on skill diffusion, aiming to bridge the academia-industry gap in semiconductor manufacturing. Topics covered included:

  • Industrial and electrical safety in fabs
  • Cleanroom protocols and wafer-level processes
  • Semiconductor packaging technologies (including OSAT perspectives)
  • Display technologies and global market overviews
  • Pneumatics, vacuum technology, and fab operations

The sessions were led by an expert line-up featuring Dr. Ashwini, Ved Mall (Director, IESA), Prof. Devendra Jalihal, and distinguished faculty from IIT Guwahati, along with industry collaborators and technical leads from SMC (Dr Devraj Singh and Aditya) and Pfeiffer Vacuum ( Vibhuti and Ashish).

Out-of-the-Box Execution

What made this initiative unique was its blended delivery model:

  • Eyes-on exposure: Lab visits, tool demonstrations, and tech videos enabled participants to see real-world semiconductor infrastructure in action.
  • Curated world-class modules: Skills such as wafer dicing, vacuum system operations, and fab safety procedures were delivered thru modules that emphasized tips, tricks and traps in real world execution.

This hybrid pedagogy:

  • Builds an industry-ready workforce for India’s semiconductor ambition.
  • Enhances employability by creating multi-domain skill stacks.
  • Supports efficient lab infrastructure utilization in the region.
  • Prepares academia to seamlessly integrate AICTE-aligned content into engineering education.

Setting the Pace for a National Movement

The IIT Guwahati workshop is part of a larger national initiative to infuse semiconductor manufacturing skills across India’s premier academic institutions. The next stop for this transformative series is IIT Gandhinagar, where the mission continues to build momentum.

A special thanks to Dr Devendra Jalihal, Director IIT Guwahati and team IIT Guwahati – especially, Dr Akshai Kumar, Dr Dipankar , Dr Franco, Dr D Pambu for enabling the workshop. We also acknowledge the hard work off-stage by Martin, Pramilla ji , Longling, Bhaskar and Ananya.

By prioritizing collaborative training ecosystems, SEMI, IESA, and ESSCI are not just training individuals—they are seeding India’s semiconductor future.
